■Today's Words■　−ドライブ−

○scrape　：　こする、表面を傷つける

『I scraped the side of my car trying to squeeze through a narrow street.』
「細い道を通り抜けようとして車の横をすっちゃった。」

○behind　：　の後ろに、後ろから

『I got hit from behind waiting at a stop-light.』
「信号待ちしていたら、後ろから追突されたんだ。」

○on paper　：　書類上の

『I'm a driver, but only on paper. I only use my driver's license for I.D.』
「私、ペーパードライバーなんだ。免許証はただの身分証代わりだね。」


■Break Time■　−driver's seat−

ご存じの方も多いように『driver's seat』とは「運転席」という意味ですよね。これに『in the』をつけて『in the driver's seat』とすると、どのような意味になるかご存じですか？
これは、支配的な立場で、物事を仕切ったり、重要事項の決定権が
あることを意味するんです。
例えば昇進などをしたときに『I've finally been promoted! I'm in the driver's seat at the company.』「とうとう昇進したよ！会社の支配者になれたんだ。」などの表現ができるんですね。
